Whats 3GP?

Its a video format specially for mobile devices like cell phones or pda's. It was introduced by the 3GPP organisation with the file postfix ".3gp".

Usage

There are all common usages of every video format, but specially its used for:

  • recording video clips with the cell phone's built in camera
  • receiving video content (like movies, music videos, funny clips) from an mobile entertainment provider
  • for video content included in mms (multimedia message service)

It's a container

To be exactly, the 3GP is only a container for a bunch of other content. First of all, there are some special system information about the included audio and video content. Beside that, you'll find the audio channel as well as the video data itselfe. The type allows 2 audio- and three video codecs:

  • video: MPEG4-part 2 or H.263 or H.264 (it should be mentioned, that H.264 is only available on the newest mobile phones)
  • audio: AMR or AAC-LC

Abbreviations

As mentioned above, there is an official postfix for the filenames called 3gp. But the MIME-Type for that is 'video/3gpp' or 'audio/3gpp' (if it only contains audio content). So there is often 3gpp used when talking about this topic. As we live in a high speed world, some people just call it 3g, meaning the 3gp video format.
